On July 29, 2016, Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy charged Charles James Cahill, Jr., 49 (DOB: 06/03/1967), of Belleville, with Operating with a High Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) Causing Serious Injury, Operating While Intoxicated - Third Offense and Driving While License Suspended Causing Serious Injury. He was also charged with the misdemeanor Open Intoxicants in Motor Vehicle.

It is alleged that on July 27, 2016 at approximately 8:20 p.m., Cahill was driving at a high rate of speed in a 55 mph zone, on a suspended license, when he ran into the rear of a van at a stop sign at Martinsville Road and Willis Road in Sumpter Township. The crash seriously injured 12 year-old Victoria Mack on July 27th and ultimately caused her death on July 30, 2016. The defendant was arraigned last week and remains in jail on a $1 million bond.

As a result of the death of Ms. Mack, Cahill's charges have been amended as follows: Second-Degree Murder, Operating with High BAC Causing Death; Operating with a Suspended License Causing Death. The misdemeanor count for Open Alcohol Container in Vehicle remains.

The defendant was arraigned this morning before Judge Tina Brooks-Green in 34th District Court and his $1 million dollar bond was revoked and he was remanded to jail. The probable cause conference is scheduled for August 17, 2016 at 9:05 a.m. before Judge BrooksGreen. The preliminary examination is scheduled for August 24, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. before Judge David Parrott.
