Prosecutor Worthy has charged Steven Guzina, 54 (DOB: 3/16/62) of Lincoln Park, in connection with the fatal car crash that killed Detroit Police Officer Myron Jarrett, 40. On October 28, 2016 at approximately 10:30 p.m., Officer Jarrett was on duty at Monica and Puritan assisting other officers in an investigation of two cars that were involved in an accident. It is alleged that Guzina was in the area driving at a high rate of speed, under the influence of intoxicants, with a 43-year-old female Detroit passenger in his car. It is further alleged that when Guzina attempted to pass the accident investigation, he struck and killed Officer Jarrett. The defendant fled the location but was arrested by Detroit police officers a short time later at a bus stop at Grand River and Schaefer.

Guzina has been charged with one count each of the following charges: Second Degree Murder; Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) Causing Death; OWI Causing Serious Bodily Injury; Failure To Stop At Scene Of Accident When At Fault, Resulting in Death; Reckless Driving Causing Death; and Reckless Driving Causing Serious Impairment of A Body Function.

Prosecutor Worthy said, "The death of Officer Jarrett is yet another very tragic result of a person allegedly driving under the influence of intoxicants, taking a life. There have been public service announcements and activism about this for decades. There are probably people driving under the influence at this very moment. Who knows when this will stop?"

Guzina was arraigned today in 36th District Court at 2:30 p.m. He was remanded to jail. The probable cause conference is on November 11, 2016 at 8:30 a.m. and his preliminary examination is on November 18, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are Judge Lydia Nance Adams in 36th District Court.
