Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Lenard Smith, 36 (DOB: 8/3/1980) and Evette Latice Walker, 31 (DOB: 12/17/1984), both of Highland Park, with Child Abuse Second Degree (10-year maximum penalty) in connection with the burning of their child. On December 9, 2016 at approximately 1:00 to 1:30 a.m., a five-year-old girl was in the family home located on Puritan in Highland Park when she burned herself while she was playing with a cigarette lighter. It is alleged that Smith and Walker knew the child had been injured and failed to seek appropriate medical care, instead applying Vaseline and toilet paper to her wounds. On December 13, 2016, Highland Park officers were dispatched to the Puritan house and transported the child to a local hospital where she was treated for infection and third degree burns on her on her chest, arms and back.

Smith and Walker were arraigned in 30th District Court before Judge Briget Officer-Hill. The probable cause conference is scheduled for December 20, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. The preliminary examination is scheduled for January 11, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge Briget Officer-Hill in 30th District court. Defendant Smith’s bond is $150,000 cash/surety and Defendant Walker’s bond is $100,000 cash/surety. Both defendants have been ordered to have no contact with children or anyone under the age of 17 years of age.

*The charges are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
