As a way to reach out to the public, the Wayne County Commission's Committee on Ways and Means will hold a budget hearing at 10 a.m. Sept. 1 at Livonia City Hall, 33000 Civic Center Drive.

The committee began its department-by-department hearings July 28 in preparation for the 2015-16 fiscal year, which starts Oct. 1. The balanced budget proposed by the county administration is for $1.54 billion; the 2014-15 budget is $1.68 billion.

The schedule for the Sept. 1 hearing, to be held in the City Council chambers, is: Wayne County Employees' Retirement System, 10 a.m.; Wayne County Commission, 10:30 a.m.; Executive's Office, 11 a.m.; and Department of Management and Budget, 11:30 a.m.

A member of the Committee on Ways and Means, first-year Commissioner Terry Marecki, is a Republican from Livonia. She represents the 9th District, which covers Northville, Northville Township and most of her hometown.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for constituents to experience county government working for them and the community," said Marecki, who was Livonia's city clerk from 2010-14 and served on the City Council from 2004-10. "Though all of our meetings are open to the public, I know it is difficult sometimes for residents to travel to downtown Detroit. Therefore, this is a glorious opportunity for them to view such key deliberations right in their own backyard."
