Commissioner Killeen to serve as keynote speaker for conference to benefit deaf, blind residents
Wayne County Commissioner Tim Killeen, D-Detroit, will be the keynote speaker of the inaugural "Community and Political Collaboration: Working to Improve the Quality of Life for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Deaf-Blind" conference, scheduled for Aug. 21.
The event - sponsored by Professional Preventive Restoration and Consultant Services Inc., founded by Dr. Odeather Allen Hill, and the Detroit Wayne Mental Health Authority - will run from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fellowship Chapel Banquet and Conference Center, 7707 W. Outer Drive, Detroit. Admission and parking are free, and July 21 is the RSVP deadline. Licensed social workers can earn three continuing education hours for $10. Organizers are hoping to break down barriers to providing adequate, quality services and advocate for governmental bodies to designate money for training and implementation. They also want to organize a task force to reach those goals.
Killeen, a commissioner since 2007, is chairman of the Commission's Committee on Health and Human Services. He also serves on the committees on Audit, Economic Development and Public Services. He represents the 1st District, which covers Detroit's lower east side, Grosse Pointe, Grosse Pointe Farms, Grosse Pointe Park, Grosse Pointe Shores, Grosse Pointe Woods and Harper Woods.
