Volunteer of the Month: Bruce Pease

Bruce Pease is a native of the Riverview community, and for the past 2 ½ years he has committed himself to giving something back to his hometown by volunteering for Meals on Wheels and delivering hot meals to homebound seniors. Pease volunteers one day each week, and that day is always special.

"I had some spare time and, it's a trite saying, but I wanted to give back to the community," he said.

"If there weren't people like me who do this, there would be a lot of people who would be deprived of a daily meal. So I think if I can help in that regard, I feel good about it."

When asked what he would tell someone considering being a Meals on Wheels volunteer for Wayne County, he didn't have to think long about his answer.

"They can feel good about what they do for roughly a half day a week, which isn't a huge commitment. Get up early, get some exercise, do something worthwhile," he said.

"Also, it's an opportunity to meet a lot of different people. And along the way you get to have a lot of little conversations, and it's kind of rewarding in that regard; you're expanding your friendship circle."

"I think the size of the program is really beneficial to the community. I see a lot of different people, and I know that each one has a lot of gratitude, and they often express that gratitude with a thank you or thanks for your service."
