Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Shaquittea Denice Reese-Bethea, 31, (DOB: 08/18/1986), of Detroit, in connection with the homicide of her one-year-old infant son. On August 29, 2017 at 9:41 p.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to the apartment of the defendant in the 3600 block of West Vernor. When the officers arrived, they found an infant male that was unresponsive and not breathing. Medics who were called to the scene pronounced the child dead at the scene. It is alleged that on August 29, 2017, the defendant killed her son by stabbing him multiple times. The defendant was transported to a local hospital for treatment for bleeding wounds on her body.

The defendant has been charged with First Degree Murder, Felony Murder, Torture, and Child Abuse First Degree*. First Degree Murder and Felony Murder are crimes where the defendant, by law, must be remanded to jail. Reese-Bethea was arraigned this afternoon before 36th District Court Magistrate Charles Anderson. The probable cause conference is scheduled for September 12, 2017 at 8:30 a.m.; the preliminary examination is scheduled for September 19, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are before 36th District Court Judge Kenneth King.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
