Dearborn Man Charged in Killing of Sister

Today Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy has charged in Haron Rajeh Elmawri, 23 (DOB: 6/13/91) of Dearborn has been charged in connection death of his sister Asyh Elmawri, 30, of Dearborn. On July 26, 2014 in the afternoon, it is alleged that Defendant Elmawri fatally strangled his sister and stabbed her multiple times with a knife. Family members called 911. Dearborn police officers arrived at the scene at approximately 1:40 p.m. and discovered Ms. Elmawri's lifeless body in her home located in the 7500 block of Bingham in Dearborn.

Defendant Elmawri has been charged with First Degree Murder and Torture. He will be arraigned this afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in 19th District Court in Dearborn.

Prosecutor Worthy to Hold Press Conference in the Evan Reed Matter

On Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at 11:00 a.m., Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy will hold a press conference to announce the results of the warrant review regarding Toledo Mud Hens pitcher Evan Reed.

The press conference will be held in the 12th Floor conference room of the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, located in the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice, 1441 St. Antoine Street, Detroit, Michigan. Only members of the press will be admitted to the press conference.

Bassel Abdul-Amir Saad - Defendant charged in connection with a fatal assault on a soccer referee in Livonia. The preliminary examination will be held tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. in 16th District Court.

Darnell Henry Cheatham - Defendant charged in connection with the July 24, 2011 death of Mariah Smith in an abandoned home on Waverly in Detroit. Today Judge Ulysses Boykin declared a mistrial after a hung jury in the case. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office will be retrying the case. The court has set a new pre-trial date on Friday, August 1, 2014 at 9:00 a.m.

Former Tiger Pitcher Evan Reed Charged In Sexual Assault

Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy has charged minor league Toledo Mud Hens baseball pitcher Evan Reed, 28, in connection with an alleged sexual assault of a 45-year-old Oakland County woman. On March 29, 2014 at 10:00 p.m., it is alleged that the complainant was at a bar in 200 block of Main Street in Royal Oak with a female friend. On March 30, 2014 around 12:00 a.m., the complainant met Reed and they danced. Afterward they sat in a booth with others and chatted. At some point, the complainant finished an alcoholic drink and began to feel odd.

After midnight on March 30, 2014, Reed and the complainant left the bar and went to a hotel located in the 2900 block of Grand River in Detroit. The complainant alleges that at approximately 7:30 a.m. on the same day, Reed sexually assaulted her in the hotel room. She further alleges that after the sexual assault, Reed instructed her to leave. More specific facts and evidence in this case will be presented in court. 

Reed has been charged with two counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct Third Degree, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of 15 years. He is charged under the theory that he is alleged to have committed an act of penetration through force or coercion. He is also charged under the theory that he committed an act of penetration when he had reason to know the victim was physically helpless or mentally incapacitated or mentally incapable to consent.

"It is important to note that in any case, the investigation must be thorough and all witnesses must be located and interviewed. This protocol remains the same if the alleged defendant is wealthy, privileged, a known figure or even a promising athlete," said Prosecutor Worthy.

Currently, arrangements are being made for Reed to turn himself in for arraignment on the charges. Once the date has been confirmed, the arraignment information will be updated.

Two Detroit Men Charged in Carjacking Homicide

Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy has charged Eric Chandler, 19 (DOB: 3/17/95) and Devon Berry, 21 (DOB: 12/1/92), both of Detroit, in connection with the carjacking and fatal shooting of Dontae Deshawn Norris, 20, of Westland. On July 28, 2014 at approximately 8:22 p.m., Norris was getting out of his car on Rutland Street when it is alleged that Berry pointed a gun at him to steal his car. Norris got out of his car and Berry and Chandler got into the car. As the two defendants drove off, Norris jumped on the car and was holding on to the roof when it is alleged that Berry fatally shot him. After the shooting, the defendants drove away. Norris was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead on arrival from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Chandler and Berry are each charged with Felony Murder, First Degree Premeditated Murder and Carjacking. Berry is also charged with Felony Firearm. Both defendants are expected to be arraigned today at 2:30 p.m. in 36th District Court.

Darnell Cheatham - Charged in the connection with the July 24, 2011 death of five-year-old Mariah Smith. The new trial has been scheduled for November 17, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. before Judge Ulysses Boykin. There is a bond motion that is scheduled for August 19, 2014 at 9:00 a.m.
