Detroit Man Charged In Inkster Infant Death

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged James Lee Saltmarshall, 22 (DOB: 12/08/94), of Detroit, in connection with the death of an eight-month-old infant. On April 20, 2017 at a hotel in the 2600 block of Michigan, the defendant was alone with his infant girl while the mother went to work in the morning. When the mother left for work, the infant was in good health. At approximately 4:23 p.m. on the same day, the Inkster police were called to the hotel by the defendant and they assisted the Fire Department in taking the unresponsive infant to a local hospital for treatment. It is alleged that the defendant killed the child by causing trauma to her head and rectal tearing was observed on the child. On Sunday, April 23, 2017, the infant expired from her injuries.

This morning the defendant was charged with Felony Murder, Child Abuse - First Degree and Criminal Sexual Conduct - First Degree.* Saltmarshall was arraigned today before 22nd District Court Judge Sabrina Johnson. The probable cause conference is scheduled for April 26, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. before Judge Johnson. No preliminary exam date has been scheduled at this time. The defendant received a $2 Million dollar cash/surety bond.

Anna M. Zarras – Eighteen-year-old Livonia woman charged with Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm, Felonious Assault and Felony Firearm in the non-fatal shooting of her 18-year-old boyfriend, Nathan Robertson. After a six day trial before Judge Wanda Evans, the jury found her not guilty on all charges.

Kellie Stock - Charged in the fatal car crash on Woodward and State Fair that killed a 72-year-old man. She is charged with Second Degree Murder along with eight other driving related offenses. The defendant waived her preliminary exam and was bound over to circuit court for an arraignment on the information on May 3, 2017 at 9:00 a.m.

Today the probable cause conference was held in the case. The investigation is ongoing and WCPO indicated to the court that time is needed before the preliminary examination for further forensic testing in the case. In light of this, WCPO requested that the defendant’s bond be lowered to a $2 million personal bond with GPS tether with a provision of no contact with children 17 years of age and younger. Judge Sabrina Johnson granted the prosecution’s request. The preliminary examination is scheduled for July 6, 2017 at 9:00 a.m.

Fourth Defendant Charged in Greektown Assault

On April 20, 2017, Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Terrell Carter, 28 (DOB: 03/25/1989, of Westland, in connection with the assault of Brandon Putnam, 23, of Detroit in Greektown. On April 16, 2017 at approximately 1:00 a.m. on Monroe and St. Antoine Streets, it is alleged that a friend of Putnam’s got into a verbal argument with a group of approximately eight men. The argument became physical and another male friend of Putnam’s was the assaulted by the group of men. When Putnam went to aid his friend, the group of men began to violently beat Putnam while he was on the ground. In addition to the beating, Putnam’s personal property was stolen. It is alleged that Carter participated in the beating and theft of Putnam. Putnam is currently being treated in a local hospital for injuries he sustained during the attack.

Carter is charged with; Unarmed Robbery, Assault with Intent to Murder, Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm, and Felonious Assault. Today WCPO was informed that the defendant was arrested and was arraigned yesterday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. before Magistrate Bari Blake Wood. The probable cause conference is scheduled for May 4, 2017 at 8:30 a.m.; the preliminary examination is scheduled for May 11, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge Deborah Lewis Langston in 36th District Court. Defendant Carter also received a $5 million cash/surety bond. He is the fourth defendant to be charged in connection with this case.

Off-Duty Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputy Charged in Fatal Car Crash

Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy has charged Wayne County Deputy Sheriff Matthew John Doss, 36, (DOB: 10/16/1980), in connection with a fatal car crash in Lincoln Park. It is alleged that on October 23, 2016 at approximately 10:25 p.m., Doss was off-duty driving his truck at Dix and Detroit Avenue in Lincoln Park when he struck Henry Lowe, 56, of Lincoln Park, who was seated in the front passenger seat in a car driven by a friend. Mr. Lowe was severely injured in the crash and was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on October 24, 2016. An investigation was conducted by the Downriver Crash Response Team and it is further alleged that Doss was travelling over the speed limit at the time of the crash.

Doss has been charged with Reckless Driving Causing Death, which carries a 15-year maximum penalty.* Doss will turn himself in to be processed on Monday, May 1, 2017 and will be arraigned at 10:30 a.m. in 25th District Court in Lincoln Park.
