Two Detroit Men Charged with Disturbing the Peace

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Dushon Shepherd, 26 (DOB: 02/20/91), and Keenan Black, 39 (DOB: 06/1/1978) with Disturbing the Peace. Both defendants are Detroit residents.

On June 10, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. at McNichols and Lindsay Streets it is alleged that the two defendants were armed with what appeared to be handguns when they approached a car. Shepherd and Black were observed by police to be involved in a robbery of the male occupant of a sport car. Believing that a robbery was in progress, and fearing for the safety of the robbery victim, one of the officers discharged his weapon. No one was injured and both defendants were placed under arrest. The investigation revealed that the hand guns were fake and the robbery was a scene that was staged for a video that was being filmed.

Shepherd and Black have each been charged with Disturbing the Peace*, a 93-day misdemeanor. Both defendants were arraigned this afternoon before 36th District Court Magistrate Millicent Sherman. A pre-trial is scheduled for June 23, 2017 before Judge Roberta Archer in 36th District Court. Both defendants received a $5,000/10% deposit bond.

Inkster Man Charged in Fatal Car Crash at West Canfield and Second Avenue

Today Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Deandre Merkie Simmons, 42, (DOB: 12/07/74), of Inkster, in connection with a car crash that killed a 73-year-old South Lyon man and seriously injured a 65-year-old Milford woman and injured a 65-year-old Milford man.

On June 8, 2017 at approximately 5:15 p.m., it is alleged that Simmons was intoxicated when he drove his car on the wrong side of the street, striking the three victims as they were crossing West Canfield in front of a location in the 440 block of Canfield. They were all taken to a local hospital for treatment. The 73-year-old man died from injuries he sustained in the crash. The 65-year-old woman remains in the hospital where she is receiving treatment for her injuries. The 65-year-old was treated and released from the hospital.

Simmons has been charged with: 1. Driving with License Suspended Causing Death; 2. Reckless Driving Causing Death; 3. Operating Under the Influence Causing Death; 4. Driving While License Suspended Causing Serious Injury; 5. Reckless Driving Causing Serious Impairment and 6. Operating While Intoxicated Causing Serious Injury*.

Simmons was arraigned on June 10, 2017 before 34th District Court Magistrate Linda Mack. The probable cause conference is scheduled for June 16, 2017 at 8:30 a.m.; the preliminary examination is scheduled for June 23, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge Lydia Nance Adams in 36th District Court. The defendant received a $100,000 cash/surety bond.

Sixteen-Year-Old Juvenile Charged in Brick Throwing Incidents

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged a juvenile male (DOB: 09/27/2000), of Detroit, in connection with two separate incidents of throwing a brick at moving vehicles.

On May 24, 2017 at 11:35 p.m. on the Chrysler Freeway, a Detroit woman’s car was struck by a large brick that damaged her car. It is alleged that the juvenile threw at brick at the car causing damage. The woman reported the incident to the police on the same day. He has been charged with Assault with Intent to Commit Great Bodily Harm Less Than Murder, Felonious Assault, Throwing Objects at Trains/Cars Causing Property Damage and Malicious Destruction of Property - $200 and less than $1,000*.

On May 25, 2017 at 12:40 a.m. on the Chrysler Freeway, it is alleged that the juvenile smashed a brick into another Detroit woman’s car, causing damage to the car and injuring her two-year-old granddaughter in the head. The child was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

In this case, he has also been charged with Assault with Intent to Commit Great Bodily Harm Less Than Murder, Felonious Assault, Throwing Objects at Trains/Cars Causing Property Damage and Malicious Destruction of Property - $200 and less than $1,000*. Investigation by the Detroit Police Department led to identification and arrest of the juvenile.

The juvenile respondent will have his pre-trial hearing on both cases on Friday, June 16, 2017 at 8:30 a.m. before Judge Virgil Smith in the Lincoln Hall of Justice. He is currently being held in the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility.

Detroit Man Arraigned in Fatal Shooting of Son

Karleton J. Wright 50(DOB:01-27-1967, of Detroit has been charged by Prosecutor Kym Worthy in connection with the death of his son Eric L. Hatchett, 36, of Southfield. On June 12, 2017 at 4:20 p.m. the defendant was at his auto repair business located in the 19900 block of James Couzens with his son. It is alleged that the men had a heated argument where Hatchett hit Wright in the face and Wright pulled out his handgun fatally shooting Hatchett. Wright drove Hatchett to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Wright has been charged with Second Degree Murder and Felony Firearm.* He is expected to be arraigned in 36th District 10:30 a.m. Wright was arraigned this morning before 36th District Court Magistrate Charles Anderson. The probable cause conference is scheduled for June 23, 2017 at 8:30 a.m.; the preliminary examination is scheduled for June 30, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. Both hearings are before Judge Kenneth King in 36th District Court.

Jonathan A. Barker - (DOB: 01/30/93) - Taylor man charged with the June 13, 2016 armed robbery of a 64-year-old Taylor woman in the parking lot of a Kroger store located in the 7000 block of Monroe in Taylor. It is alleged that Barker stole the victim’s personal property and when she attempted to stop him by going to the passenger side of his car he sped away throwing the victim from the car. The defendant has been charged with Armed Robbery and is expected to be arraigned in 23rd District Court in Taylor this morning. We have not received a time for the arraignment that will take place this morning.

Ledora Watkins - After investigating the case the prosecution agreed with the defense that the trial testimony regarding hair analysis given in 1976 was flawed evidence under the 2016 revised FBI standards for hair comparison. Finding that there is insufficient evidence for a retrial, WCPO dismissed the case against Ledora Watkins.

Detroit Woman Charged With Fatal Car Crash Killing Boyfriend

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Danisha L. Mathis, 20 (DOB: 04//09/1997), of Detroit, has been charged in connection with the death of her boyfriend, Terrence Ricks, Jr., 25, of Detroit. On June 13, 2017 at 9:13 p.m., it is alleged that Defendant Mathis was driving her car in the 21000 block of West Seven Mile, chasing Mr. Ricks, who was running from her car on foot. During the chase, it is alleged that the defendant drove on the sidewalk at Trinity Street and Seven Mile and hit Mr. Ricks dragging him under her car. Mr. Ricks eventually became dislodged from the car. The defendant fled the scene in her car at a high rate of speed down Trinity Street. Emergency medical technicians responded to the scene and transported Mr. Ricks to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. After an investigation by the Detroit Police Department, the defendant was arrested on June 14, 2017.

Defendant Mathis has been charged with First Degree Murder*. She was arraigned at 2:30 this afternoon before 36th District Court Magistrate Dawn M. White. The probable cause conference is scheduled for June 26, 2017 at 8:30 a.m.; the preliminary examination is scheduled for July 3, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. Both hearings are before 36th District Court Judge Lydia Nance Adams.
