Fatal Car Crash Killing Six-Month-Old at Puritan and Archdale - Currently WCPO is reviewing a warrant request. It is expected that charges will be issued in time for a 2:30 p.m. arraignment today.

Detroit Man and Detroit Mother Charged in Fatal Car Crash Killing Her Six-Month-Old Boy

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Deandre L. Cody, 31 (DOB: 04/03/1986), of Detroit, in connection with a fatal car crash that killed a six-month-old child and injured three others. On Thursday, May 18, 2017 at approximately 8:20 p.m., it is alleged that Cody was driving south on Archdale Street and disregarded a stop sign at Puritan. Cody’s car crashed into a car traveling west on Puritan, driven by Latoya Sharese Powels, 40, (DOB: 01/03/1977) of Detroit. It is alleged that Powels was driving while intoxicated with her three children in the rear passenger area of the car, not strapped into their car seats. The three children, a boy six months old, and two girls, two and four years of age, were ejected from the car onto Puritan. It is further alleged that Cody fled the scene in his car. The woman and her three children were privately taken to a local hospital for treatment. At the hospital, the infant boy was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the crash.

Cody has been charged and arraigned with one count of Failure to Stop at an Accident When at Fault Resulting in Death, two counts of Failure to Stop at an Accident Resulting in Serious Injury Resulting in Death or Serious Impairment, one count of Driving with License Suspended (DWLS) Causing in Death, and two counts of DWLS Causing in Serious Injury.* His probable cause hearing is on May 30, 2017 at 8:30 a.m. and his preliminary examination is on June 6, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. before Judge Deborah Lewis Langston. He received a $500,000 cash/surety bond.

Defendant Powels is charged with one count Involuntary Manslaughter, three counts Child Abuse Second Degree, one count Operating While Intoxicated (OWI)Occupant Less than 16, and one count OWI High BAC.* Powels was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The defendant was arraigned in the hospital and was given a two million dollar cash/surety bond. The probable cause conference is scheduled for May 30, 2017; the preliminary examination is scheduled for June 6, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. Both hearings are before Judge Deborah Lewis Langston in 36th District Court.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Redford Township Man Sentenced in Multiple Home Invasions and Sexual Assaults

In September 2016 Wayne County Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy charged Ikeie Ranordo Smith, 33, (DOB: 05/02/1998) of Redford Township, with multiple charges of Home Invasion, Criminal Sexual Conduct and other crimes throughout multiple jurisdictions. Today he was sentenced by Judge Roberson.

Charges

Dearborn Charges

On September 15, 2016, Smith was arraigned in 19th District Court in Dearborn at 10:30 a.m. on two home invasion cases. On August 10, 2013 it is alleged that Smith broke into the Dearborn home of a woman. He has been charged with Home Invasion First Degree. On August 13, 2015 it is alleged that he broke into the Dearborn home of another woman. He has also been charged with Home Invasion First Degree in the second case.

Allen Park Charges

On Tuesday, September 13, 2016, Smith was charged in connection with a sexual assault against a woman that occurred in Allen Park in July 6, 2015. The charges are Home Invasion First Degree and three counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct First Degree. There was another warrant that has been returned to the Allen Park Police Department for further investigation.

Dearborn Heights Charges

On Tuesday, September 13, 2016, the Dearborn Heights Police Department presented two warrants for review. On September 14, Smith was charged in connection with a home invasion and sexual assault against a woman that occurred in Dearborn Heights on December 9, 2013. The charges are Home Invasion First Degree, Criminal Sexual Conduct - Second Degree.

On September 14, 2016, the second warrant for Smith was charged in connection with a home invasion and sexual assault of a woman that occurred in Dearborn Heights on September 9, 2014. The charges are Home Invasion First Degree one count of Criminal Sexual Conduct - Second Degree, and Torture.

Redford Township

On September 9, 2016, Smith was charged and remanded to jail in 17th District Court in connection with two home invasions and sexual assaults against two women in Redford Township. The first case occurred in 2014 and Smith was charged with Home Invasion, Criminal Sexual Conduct First Degree and Criminal Sexual Conduct Second Degree. The second case occurred in 2016 and Smith was charged with Home Invasion, Armed Robbery, Criminal Sexual Conduct First Degree and Criminal Sexual Conduct Second Degree.

Garden City Charges

On September 9, 2016, Smith was arraigned and remanded to jail in 21st District Court in Garden City on one count of Home Invasion - First Degree; three counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct - First Degree; and one count of Criminal Sexual Conduct - Second Degree.

10 Counts of Home Invasions 1st charges: 11-20 years on one, 12-20 years on all the others

1 Count of Unarmed Robbery charges: 10-15 years 5 Counts of CSC 2nd Degree charges: 10-15 years.
