Detroit Man Charged in Fenkell Avenue Homicide

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Rasheed Joseph-Wallace Brown, 26, (DOB: 05/09/1991), of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shooting of Chawntae Stewart, 39, also of Detroit.

On March 24, 2018 at approximately 3:07 a.m., Detroit Police officers were responding to a dispatch when they observed a group of people in front of a building located in the 8200 block of Fenkell. The police officers also observed a woman who had sustained a gunshot wound. Another male victim sustained a gunshot wound as well. The female victim was privately conveyed to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. The male victim was also privately transported of a local hospital for treatment. It is alleged that an argument began inside the location, moved outside, and further escalated, and resulted in the shootings.

Investigation into the shootings by Detroit police officers led to the arrest of the defendant. Brown has been charged with Open Murder, Assault with Intent to Murder, Felon in Possession of a Firearm and three counts of Felony Firearm*.

Brown was arraigned on the warrant on April 11, 2018. The probable cause conference is scheduled for April 25, 2018 at 8:30 a.m.; the preliminary examination is scheduled for May 9, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge Kenneth King in 36th District Court.

*The charges are allegations unless and until the defendant is convicted.
