Highland Park Man Charged in Theft from MSP

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Devin Javon Gates, 21 (DOB: 07/28/1997), of Highland Park, in connection with the August 25, 2018 theft from an MSP scout car near Mack Avenue and Riopelle Street in Detroit.

It is alleged that Mr. Gates broke the rear window of an unmarked Michigan State Police (MSP) car and stole items from the car including a police issued rifle. Mr. Gates loaded the items into a stolen vehicle and left the scene. Police recovered the stolen items and the stolen vehicle.

Mr. Gates is charged with Larceny of a Firearm, Receiving and Concealing Stolen Property - Motor Vehicle, Receiving and Concealing Stolen Property valued between $1,000 and $20,000, Malicious Destruction of Police and Fire Property and Felony Firearm.*

Gates was arraigned on August 26, 2018 out-county at 34th District Court in Romulus. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for September 4, 2018 at 8:30 a.m.; the Preliminary Examination has been scheduled for September 10, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge Kenneth King in 36th District Court. The defendant received a $2,500 cash/surety bond.
