Mother and Friend Charged in Fatal Shooting of Three-Year-Old Child

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Demetrius Lorenzo Peals, 22 (DOB: 10/03/1995) and Kinesha Comeal Boyd, 20 (DOB: 09/19/1997), both of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shooting of Boyd's three-year-old son, Kyrei Boyd. On December 6, 2017 at 7:20 p.m., medics were called to an apartment in the 11700 block of Morang, shared by Boyd and Peals, to transport Boyd's son for treatment for a gunshot wound to the face. Kyrei was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Investigation by the Detroit Police Department developed Peals and Boyd as suspects in the fatal shooting of the child.

On December 6, 2017, it is alleged that Peals left a loaded firearm accessible to Kyrei while the child was in his care and a resident of his household. The child found the gun and fatally shot himself. It is further alleged that Peals knowingly and intentionally tampered with evidence. On the same day, it is also alleged that Boyd failed to provide a safe environment for her child and permitted Peals, a person known to carry a gun in the home, to have access to her child. She also is alleged to have knowingly given the police a false or misleading statement regarding the death of her child. More complete facts in the case will be introduced as evidence at the preliminary examination.
