Detroit Man Charged in Fatal Shooting
of Cab Driver on Collingwood Street

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Curtis Johnson, 35 (DOB: 03/16/1984), of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shooting of cab driver Zainul Mohammad, 54, of Hamtramck. On May 25, 2019 at 1:17 a.m. it is alleged that Johnson got into Mr. Mohammed's cab and fatally shot him multiple times in the back of his head in the 600 block of Collingwood. The defendant fled from the scene on foot.

Detroit police officers were dispatched to the scene. The police observed that the back of Mr. Mohammed's head was wounded, and the inside of his right pants pocket was pulled inside out. Medics pronounced the victim deceased at the scene. Investigation by Detroit police resulted in the identification and arrest of the defendant on May 29, 2019.

Defendant Johnson has been charged with: First Degree Murder, Felony Murder, Armed Robbery, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and four counts of Felony Firearm.* He was arraigned this afternoon before 36th District Court Magistrate Millicent Sherman. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for June 13, 2019 at 8:30 a.m.; the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for June 20, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. Both hearings are before Judge Michael Wagner in 36th District Court.
