Detroit Man Charged in Trinity Street Arson

On December 15, 2019, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Marion Scruggs, 39 (DOB: 06/29/1980), of Detroit, in connection with the arson of a residence inhabited by a 37-year-old Detroit woman that also led to the death of one of her pet dogs. The victim and the defendant were acquainted.

On November 20, 2019 at approximately 10:20 p.m., the Detroit Fire Department responded to a building fire call in the 17100 block of Trinity Street in Detroit. Upon arrival, the firefighters extinguished the fire. The victim of the home indicated to the firefighters that there were two dogs inside. The firefighters found one dog alert and the other dog unconscious. Efforts to resuscitate the unconscious animal failed. It is alleged that the victim had an argument with Scruggs and, as a result, he deliberately set the fire and burned the victim's home and caused the death of one of her pets. Investigation by the Detroit Police Department led to the arrest of the defendant.

Scruggs has been charged with Second Degree Arson and Second Degree Killing/Torturing of an Animal.* He was arraigned on December 15, 2019 in 34^th District Court in Romulus. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for December 27, 2019 and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for January 3, 2020. Both hearings are before Judge Stanford Jones in 36^th District Court. The defendant received a $75,000/10% bond. Please contact the Detroit Police Department for a photograph of the defendant.
