Eastpointe Man Charged in Robbery
and Fatal Shooting Over Cartier Glasses

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Mario Martinez Buthia, 20 (DOB: 08/11/1998), of Eastpointe, in connection with the robbery and fatal shooting of Latae'o Nathan Garrett, 18, also of Eastpointe. On May 25, 2019 at 11:23 p.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a shooting at a gas station located in the 11000 block of East Seven Mile Road. It is alleged that Buthia attempted to take the victim's Cartier glasses and when he resisted, Buthia shot him in the abdomen. The victim received medical treatment from medics at the scene and was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to the gunshot wound. Investigation by the Detroit Police Department led to the identification and arrest of Buthia on May 28, 2019.

Buthia has been charged with First Degree Murder, Felony Murder, Armed Robbery, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and four counts of Felony Firearm.* He was arraigned on Friday, May 31, 2019 and remanded to jail. His Probable Cause Conference is on June 14, 2019 at 8:30 a.m. and his Preliminary Examination is on June 21, 2019 at 1:30 .m. Both hearings are before Judge Kenyetta Jones in 36th District Court.
