Third Precinct Commander Charged in Alcohol Related Car Incident

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Third Precinct Commander Johnny Alfred Thomas, 48, in connection with an alcohol related car incident. On January 26, 2019 at approximately 12:40 a.m. at Mack and St. Antoine, it is alleged that Cmdr. Thomas was operating his department car under the influence of alcohol with his department issued firearm when he was in an accident. It is further alleged that Cmdr. Thomas hit the truck of a 48-year-old man, causing it to impact a third car that left the scene before the police arrived. Officers were dispatched to the scene and placed Thomas under arrest. The 48-year-old man was taken to a local hospital and released several hours later.

Cmdr. Thomas has been charged with Operating While Impaired - Operating with a High BAC above 0.17, contrary to MCL 257.6251C, a 180-day misdemeanor, and Possession of a Firearm while Under the Influence, contrary to MCL 750.237, a 93-day misdemeanor.*

Cmdr. Thomas was arraigned on January 30, 2019 before 36th District court Magistrate Laura Echartea. A Pre-Trial has been scheduled for February 6, 2019 at 8:30 a.m. before Judge Kenneth King in 36th District Court. The defendant received a $5,000/10% bond.
