Detroit Police Officer Charged with Misconduct and Larceny

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Michael Merritt, 40 (DOB: 06/11/1977), in connection with an alleged theft from a motor vehicle and misconduct in office. On September 19, 2017 at 6:30 p.m., Merritt was on duty at the Third Precinct, located in the 2800 block of Grand River, when it is alleged that he unlawfully removed a hydraulic jack and tools from a truck parked in the rear of the police parking lot and placed them on the ground. Shortly thereafter, it is alleged that he drove his personal vehicle over to the tools and placed them in the rear passenger seat area.

As a result of an investigation conducted by the Detroit Police Department, the defendant has been charged with Larceny from a Motor Vehicle, a felony with a maximum penalty of five years, and Misconduct in Office, a felony with a maximum penalty of five years*. Merritt is currently suspended without pay from the Detroit Police Department.

Merritt was arraigned today in 36^th District Court. He received a $25,000 personal bond. His probable cause conference is on October 20, 2017 at 8:30 a.m. and his preliminary examination is on October 25, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. before Judge William McConico in 36^th District Court.
