Monday, September 26, 2016 through Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at the Detroit Renaissance Center

On Monday, September 26, 2016 through Wednesday, September 28, 2016, Prosecutor Kym Worthy will be hosting the first Detroit Sexual Assault Kit Summit at the Detroit Renaissance Center. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office is proud to welcome the press to cover this unique event.

WDIV anchor Steve Garagiola will be the emcee for the welcoming ceremony on September 26, 2016 from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in the Mackinac Ballroom located on Level Five of the Renaissance Center. Speakers for the ceremony are: Congresswoman Debbie Dingell, Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, Mayor of Detroit Mike Duggan, Wayne County Executive Warren Evans, Detroit Police Chief James Craig and FBI ASAC Ray Johnson.

Over 290 prosecutors, victim advocates, police officials and forensic and behavioral scientists from across the country will be participating in the three day Summit. The event will feature victim-centered approaches to handling sexual assault cases, focusing on offender behavior instead of victim behavior. It will also feature a multi-disciplinary approach to cold case sexual assault investigations where all team members are trained in the effects of trauma on behavior and memory. Topics include evidence-based best practices, lessons learned from communities dealing with the problem of untested rape kits and research from national experts.
