Michael Evans receives Spirit of Detroit award

Wayne County Treasurer Eric Sabree joins City Council President Brenda Jones and City Council members in honoring Michael Evans with the "Spirit of Detroit" Award for his selfless act of generosity in voluntarily paying an elderly woman's $5,000 in back taxes to avoid foreclosure. Evans was visiting the Wayne County Treasurer's office in August when he saw a elderly woman in a wheelchair crying because her home faced foreclosure and auction. Having recently lost a loved one, Evans said the situation pulled at his heart strings and he paid the back taxes. Sabree said his generosity was rare and very welcome. Treasurer Sabree has engaged private sector businesses and individuals in past years to help pay off back taxes for hundreds of people that owed less than $1,000.00 on their taxes. Sabree says he does not like to foreclose on anyone's home and will do everything possible within the law to help people stay in their homes.

Sabree said he thinks Evans deserves the "Spirit of Detroit" Award and he encourages people to help their neighbors and friends who are in danger of losing their homes. Send them to our office, we will do everything we can to assist them in getting financial aid or enroll in a program for assistance. The Wayne County Treasurer's Office has reduced foreclosures in Detroit by 85% over the past three years.
