On August 6, 2021, Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Dr. Barika Butler-Quarles, 42, a licensed psychiatrist, of Grosse Pointe. She has been charged in connection with the non-fatal shooting of a 41-year-old woman, of Texas. At the time of the assault the victim was the girlfriend of the defendant's ex-husband; she is no longer associated with him.

On August 4, 2021, at approximately 7:55 p.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 2500 block of Woodward Avenue for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers located the victim outside of the residence, suffering from gunshot wounds. Medics arrived on the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment.

The defendant entered into her ex-husband's residence without his permission. She startled the victim before producing and firing a handgun at the victim, non-fatally wounding her. From one fired shot the victim suffered four bullet wounds. The bullet entered her left bicep, exited the back of her arm into her left side and exited out of her back. The ex-husband was able to wrestle the weapon from the hands of the defendant before other shots were fired.

On August 6, 2021, Barika Butler-Quarles was arraigned on one count of Assault with Intent to Murder, one count of Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm, one count of Discharge of a Firearm in a Building Causing Injury, one count of First-Degree Home Invasion, one count of Carrying a Concealed Weapon, and four counts of Felony Firearm.

On January 17, 2024, Butler-Quarles was convicted by a jury of these charges: Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm, First-Degree Home Invasion, Discharge of a Firearm in a Building Causing Injury, and three counts of Felony Firearm.

On February 1, 2024, she was sentenced before Judge John Gillis to 57 months to 20 years for First-Degree Home Invasion, 36 months to 15 years for Discharge of a Firearm in a Building Causing Injury, 29 months to 10 years for Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm, and two years to be served consecutive for two counts of Felony Firearm, except on the Felony Firearm count on the First-Degree Home Invasion charge.
