Highland, Michigan Woman Charged with Assault and
Abandonment of Her Newborn Infant

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Jennifer Kayla Woodard, 23 (DOB: 07/23/1997), of Highland, Michigan, in connection with the assault and abandonment of her newborn infant.

On September 10, 2020, Detroit Police were dispatched to a local hospital located in the 6000 block of West Outer Drive in response to a 911 call after a newborn infant had been dropped off at that location without parents. Investigation by the officers led to the arrest of the defendant on September 13, 2020. It is alleged that the defendant gave birth at the residence of an acquaintance. It is also alleged that the defendant threw the infant into a garbage can. The acquaintance found the newborn child and drove her to the local hospital for treatment. When the infant arrived at the hospital, she was cold to the touch and lost a large amount of blood, requiring a blood transfusion. This condition was due to the umbilical cord not being clamped off.

Woodard has been charged with Assault With Intent to Murder, Child Abandonment and Second Degree Child Abuse.* She was arraigned on September 15, 2020 before 36th District Court Magistrate Malaik Ramsey-Heath. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for September 22, 2020 at 8:30 a.m.; the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for September 29, 2020 at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge Ronald Giles in 36th District Court. The defendant received a $50,000/10% bond. Please contact the Detroit Police Department for a photograph of the defendant.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
