Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Jacob Thomas Mraulak, 28, of Romulus, in connection with a car crash that killed Vivian Carmody, 68, and injured her husband Dan Carmody, 68, both of Detroit. Mr. Carmody is the Chief Executive Officer of Eastern Market.

On August 18, 2023, at approximately 5:28 p.m., it is alleged that Defendant Mraulak was intoxicated, driving against traffic on East Lafayette Street near St. Aubin Street when he drove onto the sidewalk, striking both victims. Medics arrived on the scene and transported both victims and the defendant to a local hospital for treatment. Ms. Carmody succumbed to her injuries later the same day and was pronounced deceased. More specific details about the case will come out in court at the preliminary examination.

Jacob Thomas Mraulak has been charged with Operating While Intoxicated Causing Death, Reckless Driving Causing Death, Operating While Intoxicated Causing Serious Injury, and Reckless Driving Causing Serious Injury. *

Mraulak was arraigned this afternoon in 36th District Court and given a $250,000 cash bond with conditions of no alcohol, no intoxicating substances, GPS and alcohol tether, and house arrest. A Bond Re-determination hearing is scheduled for August 25, 2023, at 9:00 a.m., before Judge William McConico. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for August 30, 2023, at 8:30 a.m., before Judge Kenneth King. Please request a photograph of the defendant from the Detroit Police Department.

"This is a harsh fact: Every time you get behind the wheel of a car, you should be acutely aware that you are potentially driving an instrumentality of death. Traffic accidents happen. There is no denying that. Criminal traffic tragedies do not just happen. There is a reason for them, and criminal consequences attach including, possibly, a loss of freedom. Our hearts go out to Mr. Carmody and his family at this very difficult time." said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
