"My office has been working on this issue for almost a decade. We have charged quite a few parents and caregivers for allowing their guns that were not safely stored to fall into the hands of innocent children with catastrophic results. The deaths and serious injuries that followed were absolutely, 100% preventable.

"We brought these issues to the Michigan legislature multiple times during the years and were unsuccessful. In the meantime, more senseless deaths occurred. I am beyond ecstatic that last year's legislature acted swiftly and with purpose to give prosecutors across the state the needed tools to right these wrongs," said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.
